Thiamine deficiency in cats is also known as vitamin b1 deficiency, it is so rare in cats but still it is always best to know symptoms and their causes. Find here

  • Thiamine deficiency is simply the lack of thiamine or Vitamin B1 in the cat’s body. The ailment is more common in cats than in dogs.
  • Thiamine is not stored in the body so it is important that the cat gets a regular dose of the vitamin.
  • This deficiency is often seen in cats fed with raw fish.

  • The presence of excess sulfites in the body could interfere with the absorption of thiamine. Less or no absorption would, for sure, lead to a deficiency.
  • This ailment is not contagious; however, pets in the same household could develop the same ailment. This could be because these pets are fed the same diet and are exposed to similar conditions.

Symptoms of Thiamine Deficiency in Cats

There are a number of symptoms that indicate that the cat might have thiamine deficiency.

  • Muscle weakness
  • Fixed and dilated pupils
  • Seizures
  • Ataxia manifested by wobbly walking
  • Loss of righting reflexes
  • The neck is constantly bending in downward position also called ventroflexion
  • Anorexia
  • Seizures
  • Salivation
  • Aggression
  • Slow heartbeat or bradycardia

Possible Causes of Thiamine Deficiency

Thiamine deficiency may be caused by any or a combination of the following:

  • Feeding the pet cat with raw fish
  • Imbalanced diet
  • Over processed food items, especially canned food. Some canned food items have preservatives that could affect thiamine absorption.
  • Sulfites in the food items. Sulfites could deactivate the thiamine found in the cat’s body.
  • Over cooked food items.

    When food items are cooked, the thiamine inside them is dissolved in the water. Heat could, then, destroy this thiamine.
